Men's Tennis Continues Hot Start With Win Over UT Permian Basin

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Men's Tennis squad is off to one of its best starts in recent program history. The Rattlers took down UT Permian Basin, 5-2 on Friday night to move to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

St. Mary's won just one doubles match as Jeremiah Sanchez and Leon Hein defeated Jorge Garcia and Hector Flores, 7-5. The Rattlers dropped their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, thus dropping the doubles point to UT Permian Basin.

Brendan Brown put the first point on the board for St. Mary's as he defeated Garcia at the No. 3 line, 6-4, 6-1. James Finnigan was moved into the No. 6 line at the last minute, but unphased, Finnagan cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory to give the Rattlers a 2-1 match advantage.

UT Permian Basin evened things at two when Aditya Iyer locked up a win at No. 2 singles, defeating Nicolas Llosa, 6-3, 6-4.

Jeremiah Sanchez put the Rattlers back in front after a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot. With the match on the line, Leon Hein won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the win for St. Mary's.

At the No. 6 line, Ryan Koth picked up a three-set win for the second straight day. Koth battled to win the second set, 6-4 before winning the third in a tie-break, 11-9.

St. Mary's will return to action on March 6 as they host Our Lady of the Lake at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
