SAN ANGELO, Texas – The St. Mary's Baseball Team took a late lead over No. 1 Angelo State in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, but couldn't sustain the lead, falling 11-10 after dropping game one 8-0.
The Rattlers (7-5, 5-4 Lone Star Conference) scored five runs in the top of the eighth for the 10-7 advantage, but the Rams (9-1, 5-1) scored three to knot the score in the bottom half of the inning and won on a fielder's choice with two runners on base in the ninth for the series sweep.
St. Mary's scored 10 runs on 10 hits, while Angelo State also had 10 hits for its 11 runs. Three of the 10 hits were by senior
Mitchell Caskey (Houston). He also walked, scored once and had an RBI. Senior
Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Senior
Dylan Bells (Regina, Saskatchewan) started on the hill in a no decision. He gave up six runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Senior
Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) allowed only one run on one hit through three innings, fanning three and junior
Collin Storms (Lewisville, Texas) fell to 1-2 in 2021 after surrendering four runs on one hit with five walks.
GAME ONE RECAP
Angelo State scored eight runs on 11 hits, while St. Mary's was shutout despite recording seven hits.
Six of the seven hits were by the top six spots in the lineup and senior
Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) was the only Rattler with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Sophomore
Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) also reach twice, drawing a pair of walks.
Senior Zach De la Garza (San Antonio) moved to 1-1 on the year with the loss. He allowed five earned runs (seven total) on 11 hits with four strikeouts and he didn't walk anyone through six innings. Freshmen
Logan Taylor (Adkins, Texas) and
Josh Malone (New Braunfels, Texas) each pitched one inning in relief. Taylor walked three, but got out of the jam, while Malone surrendered one run after walking three and hitting a batter.
The Rattlers host Texas A&M International for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 6 at 6 p.m.
