SAN ANTONIO – Despite the top of the order going 5-for-8, the St. Mary's Baseball team couldn't overcome a four-run first inning for Texas A&M International, dropping the opening game of the series 6-4 on Friday night.
Senior
Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) went 3-for-5 and junior
Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) was 2-for-3 as the first two hitters in the Rattlers (7-6, 5-5 Lone Star Conference) lineup, amassing five of the team's nine hits. Mueller scored two of the four runs, while Mares scored one and junior
Mac Papini (San Antonio) crossed the plate for the other. Senior
Mitchell Caskey (Houston) collected two RBI's on a pair of sacrifice flies.
The Dust Devils (5-8, 5-8 Lone Star) scored their six runs on 10 hits and were aided by four errors by the Rattlers.
Junior
Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) snapped a three-game winning streak on the hill, giving up four earned runs on seven hits. He walked four and fanned seven in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Senior
Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout.
The Dust Devils plated four in the top of the first inning, but the Rattlers immediately answered. Mueller singled to left and Mares singled back up the middle. A wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet. Mueller scored on a ground out by sophomore
Mauro Bustamante (Helotes, Texas) and a sacrifice fly by Caskey plated Mares to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
Papini led off the second with a triple down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore
Brandon Broughton (Corpus Christi, Texas) for the 4-3 score.
International added one run each in the top of the seventh and eighth to push the lead to 6-3.
Mueller hit a high-chopper to third to start the eighth with a single, Mares followed with a single up the middle and senior
Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) singled to centerfield to knock out the Dust Devils starter. Caskey hit a sacrifice fly to left center as the scoreboard read 6-4.
The two teams meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader at Dickson Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYER & TEAM NOTES
- Mitchell Caskey and Brandon Broughton are currently tied for the Lone Star Conference lead and second in the nation with three sacrifice flies each. Caskey had two against the Dust Devils, while Broughton added one.
- Mac Papini tallied the first extra-base hit of his St. Mary's career, tripling down the right field line in the second inning.
- Connor Schmidt struck out a season-high seven batters and he now has 23 K's in 25.2 innings pitched.
- The four errors committed by the Rattlers are the most in a game this season.
- Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) stretched his streak of reaching base safely to nine straight games. McGowen is also on a six-game hitting streak, which is tied for the longest on the club in 2021.
