SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team took to the court today, their first time playing a home match on campus in over a year. The Rattlers defeated Southwestern University, 7-0 at Rohrbach Stadium. The win moves the Rattlers to 4-0 on the season.
In doubles action, St. Mary's took two-of-three matches from the Pirates. At the No. 1 line,
Maria Garcia and
Marina Vigil fell behind early but battled back to win 7-5.
Ashley Penshorn and Gabby Ioannou cruised to a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 line to secure the doubles point for the Rattlers.
"I was proud of our girls' effort after not being able to practice last week due to the weather," said Director of Tennis,
Bill Macom. "This was a good tune-up match as we prepare to open Lone Star Conference play tomorrow against UT Permian Basin."
The Rattlers swept all six singles matches for the fourth straight time this season.
Maria Garcia finished her singles match first at the No. 2 spot as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Esther Bowers. Vigil came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Emma Kesterson.
Alice Thane handled Chandler Vrba with no issues, winning 6-2,6-2 in the No. 6 spot.
Ashley Penshorn and Ioannou both earned 6-2, 6-3 victories at the No.1 and No. 4 spot, respectively.
Abigail Csengery grinded out a victory the No. 5 line as she dropped the first set 6-4 but came back to win 6-3, and 10-6 in the final two.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Rattlers as they host UT Permian Basin at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
