SAN ANTONIO – Career nights for
Mamady Djikine and
Miles McDougal helped lead the St. Mary's Men's Basketball team past St. Edward's on Friday night. The Rattlers held off a late surge from the Hilltoppers to come away with a 76-73 victory.
Djikine finished with a double-double, 23 points and 13 rebounds. McDougal scored a team-high 30 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc.
With just one day to prepare for the Hilltoppers due to a schedule change, the St. Mary's defense kept the St. Edward's offense in check. The Hilltoppers shot just 39 percent from the field and 27 percent from long distance.
The win over the Hilltoppers is the first for St. Mary's since the 2016-17 season. St. Edward's had won the previous seven meetings before tonight.
The Rattlers out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 39-to-35. St. Mary's had efficient shooting night, shooting 51 percent from the field and 57 percent from three.
Friday was the first of four straight games between the Rattlers and the Hilltoppers as the two teams will meet in Austin on Saturday at 5 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 18 the two teams return to San Antonio and finish the season series on Saturday, Feb. 20 in Austin.
