SAN ANTONIO – In the team's final non-conference game of 2021, the St. Mary's Men's Basketball team dominated Ecclesia College, winning 103-45 on Wednesday afternoon.
All 13 Rattlers (3-6) scored at least two points and a quartet scored in double figures led by
Josh Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind.) with 17.
Mamady Djikine (Paris, France) added 12, senior
Parker Gettys (New Braunfels, Texas) chipped in 11 and sophomore
Tyler Caron (Longview, Texas) scored 10 and had a team-high seven rebounds. Senior
Kobe Magee (San Antonio) dished out seven assists in just 10 minutes of action and both senior
Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) and junior
Ryan Leonard (Kerry, Ireland) led with three steals each.
The Rattlers tallied 24 assists on 38 made baskets and scored 39 points off Royals turnovers. No one on the team played more than 20 minutes as the team shot 54.3 percent from the floor. StMU also won the battle of the boards, 46-to-32 and they forced the Royals into 35 turnovers.
Ecclesia opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but the Rattlers took over quickly, jumping out to a 34-9 lead and taking a 55-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. Eleven different StMU players scored at least two points in the first half, including 12 by Brewer and 10 by Caron. The 55 points by the Rattlers is tied for the most scored in a half this season, tying the squad's second half against Huston-Tillotson on Dec. 4.
The Rattlers dominance continued in the second half, as they built a 58-point lead, 101-43, with 3:17 to play.
Ecclesia was led by Matthew Claudio with 11 points and Wisdom Kowouto led the game with 10 rebounds. Terrell Green paced the team with four assists.
St. Mary's turns its attention to Lone Star Conference play, hosting UT Permian Basin on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Falcons defeated the Rattlers 76-68 on Dec. 11 in a non-league tilt.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYER & TEAM NOTES
- The Rattlers topped the century mark in scoring for the first time since Feb. 13, 2020 when the team won 101-93 over Western New Mexico.
- Parker Gettys scored a career-high 11 points, bettering his previous high of eight from the season-opener against Colorado Mines.
- The 55 points in the first half by the Rattlers is tied for the most scored in a half this season, tying the squad's second half against Huston-Tillotson on Dec. 4.
- This was the first-ever meeting between St. Mary's and Ecclesia on the hardwood.
- All 13 players scored at least two points, 11 of the 13 grabbed at least one rebound and nine different Rattlers had at least one assist in the balanced attack.
