DENVER, Colo. – Turnovers proved extremely costly for the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team against #23/11 Colorado School of Mines in the 2021-2022 season opener on Friday evening on the campus of Regis University.
The Rattlers (0-1) turned the ball over 31 times in the 80-54 loss and 12 of the 13 players recorded at least one miscue against the pressure defense of the Orediggers.
Fifth-year senior
Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) led the team with 14 points and six rebounds, while junior
Briley Perkins (Houston) hit three of the team's six three-pointers on the night for nine points. Freshman Sarai Estupiñan (Cedar Park, Texas) paced the team with three assists.
In the first game of the South Central Regional Crossover, host Regis edged St. Edward's 62-57. The Rattlers will face the Rangers on Saturday at 5 p.m. (Central), while the Hilltoppers and Orediggers will square off at 7 p.m.
Mines jumped out to the 25-9 lead after the first period of play, but the Rattlers bounced back to outscore CSM 20-12 in the second quarter for the 37-29 halftime score. StMU was once again stymied in the third quarter, 21-8, before staying close in the fourth quarter, 22-17.
The Rattlers actually shot better from the floor, 37.2 to 33.3 percent, however the Diggers took 38 more shots. Both teams made six triples.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYER & TEAM NOTES
- St. Mary's was held to just nine offensive rebounds in the contest and the Orediggers turned the ball over just eight times.
- Friday marked the 47th double-figure scoring game of Hannah Wilson's career. She now has 917 points in her career.
- The Rattlers are now 3-12 against nationally ranked teams since Jason Martens became the head coach.
- Friday marked the first win for Colorado School of Mines in the all-time series against the Rattlers. StMU is now 2-1 all-time against the Orediggers.
