SAN ANTONIO – Different night, nearly the same story between St. Mary's and Angelo State as the teams battled to the final buzzer. Saturday's results were different as Angelo State came out on top, 67-60 to split the season series.
For the second straight game,
Miles McDougal paced the Rattlers offense with 19 points.
Mamady Djikine was right behind McDougal with 17 points of his own.
Tonight's contest started just as last nights did with
Tyler Caron draining a triple. From that point on neither team could build a lead but with the game even at 22 with 7:58 left in the first half, the Rattlers went on a short 7-0 burst to take their largest lead of the half.
Angelo State was not going away easy. The Rams responded with a 12-0 run that lasted nearly four minutes, giving them a five-point advantage with 2:36 to go in the half. McDougal and Djikine scored for the Rattlers to close the gap to 34-33 heading into the break.
Both teams shot 45 percent from the floor in the opening half.
McDougal put the Rattlers back in front early in the second half as he connected on his second three of the game just minutes into the second half.
St. Mary's faced their largest deficit of the game at 10 points with just under 12 minutes to go but a layup from
Luke Schultz and a triple from
Parker Gettys as the shot clock expired sliced the Rams lead in half.
Angelo State managed to hang on to their lead until the Rattlers scored six straight points including a triple from McDougal to even the game at 60 with 58 seconds left to play. On the ensuing possession, Sam Baker put the Rams ahead for good as he drained a three from the left wing with 28 seconds left.
St. Mary's heads back out on the road, playing a Wednesday evening contest at UT Tyler. The two teams return to Bill Greehey for a Saturday matchup slated for 5:30 p.m.
