TUCSON, Arizona – The St. Mary's University softball team split a pair of games at the Cactus Classic this afternoon. The Rattlers opened up the day with an 8-2 victory over Dixie State before falling 5-2 to Simon Fraser University.
GAME ONE
St. Mary's starting pitcher
Staci Johns held a Dixie State team who was averaging nearly seven runs per game to just two runs. Johns tossed a complete game, giving up six hits while striking out two batters.
The difference in the game came in the third inning when Abigail Carney belted a grand slam, her second home run of the season, to put the Rattlers in front, 4-1. St. Mary's added to their lead in the sixth inning when
Bari Christian came around to score on an
Amber Gonzales double.
Taylor Germain added two more runs in the seventh as she drove in
Jayme Johns and
Victoria Aldridge who both reached on singles in the inning. Christian drove in the final run of the game for the Rattlers.
Five Rattlers finished with two hits.
GAME TWO
St. Mary's scored first in the second game of the day as Christian led off the second inning with a triple, scoring on a fielder's choice from
Juliana Cerda.
Aracelli Sanchez came on to pinch run for Cerda. After stealing second, Sanchez scored on a
Jayme Johns single to give the Rattlers the early 2-0 advantage.
The difference came in the third inning when two St. Mary's errors allowed Simon Fraser to plate five runs.
Alex McLennan came on in relief and shut Simon Fraser down, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing just one hit over the final four innings.
Christin and
Jayme Johns each finished with a pair of hits in the loss.

The Rattlers will close out the Cactus Classic tomorrow as they take on California University of Pennsylvania at 10:00 a.m.
