Second Half Does In Men's Hoops

SAN ANTONIO – Despite a career-high 23 points from Dylan Isenhower and the first double-double of Kobe Magee's career, the St. Mary's Men's Basketball team couldn't overcome several second-half runs against Tarleton State on Saturday evening, falling 84-66.

Isenhower, a sophomore from Abilene, Texas, scored a game-high 23 points, bettering his previous career-high of 19 from earlier this season against Texas-Tyler on Nov. 23. He led a trio of Rattlers (9-12, 5-10 Lone Star Conference) in double digits in scoring as Magee, a junior from San Antonio posted 16 points and tied his career-high with 10 assists. Senior Markques Houston (Houston, Texas) chipped in 11 points and also tied his career-high with five assists.

Freshman Emmanuel Ewuzie (San Antonio) led the team with nine rebounds, while Houston led the club with two steals. The Rattlers did a good job of distributing the ball as they recorded 21 assists on 24 made baskets.

St. Mary's shot 42.1 percent for the game and 36.7 percent from the arc (11-for-30), while they made 50 percent of its free throw attempts (7-for-14). The Texans (12-8, 8-6 Lone Star) shot 53.2 percent from the floor, 31.8 from the three-point line and 73.3 (11-for-15) from the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Texans scored the first four points of the game before Traylor got the team on the board. A fastbreak jumper for TSU put them up four, but Houston cut the lead in half with two free throws. After a traditional three-point play for the Texans, sophomore Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) hit the team's first triple of the day for the 9-7 score with 15:10 to play. TSU made one free throw and Magee knotted the score at 10-10 with a triple. The teams traded three's and the Texans made back-to-back baskets to lead by four, 17-13. Houston pulled the Gold & Blue within one on a trey, but the Texans nailed a pair of free throws for the 19-16 score. Magee made one free throw attempt and the teams exchanged baskets twice to make it 23-21. After a triple for the Texans, Isenhower drilled both attempts at the charity stripe for the 26-23 tally. He then dunked it to bring the Rattlers within one, but TSU immediately answered for the 28-25 score with 6:50 on the clock. The teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the half and the team's entered the locker room with the scoreboard reading 37-32.

TSU scored the first six of the second stanza, but the Rattlers answered with a five-point run of their own for the 43-37 tally. Another six straight were scored by the Texans and the Rattlers made back-to-back buckets for the 49-41 score.  The Texans again went on a short run, this one eight points before freshman Jaron Pressley (Katy, Texas) made a triple to stop the streak and make the score 57-44. TSU scored five straight and the Rattlers answered with five straight. For the third-straight time, the Texans scored five in a row when Isenhower drained a trey for the 67-52 score.  After three straight by the Texans, Jordan sank a pair of free throws and TSU answered with a seven-point run to push the lead to 23, 77-54. Magee made another three-pointer and the teams traded baskets for the 79-59 tally. TSU made back-to-back buckets when Magee made a fastbreak layup. After one for TSU, Isenhower again made it a 20-point spread with a triple. Magee ended the scoring with a layup at 32 seconds for the 84-66 final.
