LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite a career-high 18 points from senior
Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas), the St. Mary's women's basketball team could never get into an offensive rhythm on Friday evening in the season opener at Lubbock Christian, falling 88-52.
Culiver led the Rattlers (0-1, 0-1 Lone Star Conference) with 18 points, surpassing her previous career mark of 15 from two years ago at Angelo State (Dec. 8, 2018). Senior
Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) also scored in double figures with 13 points.
Sophomore transfer
Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland) led all players with nine rebounds, while Wilson was second with eight.
St. Mary's was solid at the free throw line, sinking 17 of 21 attempts for 81 percent. Culiver was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line, Wilson was 7-for-9 and Ryng sank all three of her attempts.
Lubbock Christian (1-0, 1-0 Lone Star) led for 36:37 of the game and was led by Ashton Duncan with 26 points, while Allie Schulte contributed 15 and led the Lady Chaps with six rebounds.
The two teams square off tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. St. Mary's will look to snap an eight-game losing skid against the Lady Chaps in the second meeting. The Rattlers open the home portion of their season on Sat, Dec. 19 at noon against Texas Woman's.
