St. Mary's Volleyball Begins Season at BritKare Lady Bluff Classic

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball opens its season this weekend at the BritKare Lady Bluff Classic in Canyon, Texas, where the team will face the host, West Texas A&M, and Tuskegee on Friday and Southern Arkansas on Saturday.
ST. MARY'S

Head coach Stephanie Armstrong begins her second full year at the helm of Women's Volleyball. She helped the team finish in the top three in kills, assists and aces in the Heartland Conference last season.

Outside hitter Alissa Tolbert returns for her sophomore season after finishing second in aces and fifth in points per set in the conference last season as a freshman. Setters Bree Perry and Haley Bradfute combined for over 1,000 assists last season and both return to help the Rattler offense.

The Rattlers now enter their first season as part of the Lone Star conference and were picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll.
WEST TEXAS A&M

The Lady Buffs are coming off of a 19-13 season that saw them advance to the second round of the Lone Star Conference tournament. First-year head coach Kendra Potts looks to continue the team's success heading into the 2019 season.

The senior trio of Selena Batiste, Taylor Kress and Lindsey Smith combined for over 850 kills, while junior middle blocker Destiny Jones added 108 blocks. Batiste led the team in assists with 750 last season.

West Texas was picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll.

The Rattlers are 0-3 against the Lady Buffs in the all-time series after getting swept last season in Canyon.
TUSKEGEE

The Golden Tigers went 17-15 last season and won a pair of matches in the SIAC tournament before getting eliminated. Head coach Janay Yancey enters her third year at Tuskegee, having improved from three conference wins in her first year to 10 last season.

Junior outside hitter Crystal Hall returns after coming in second on the team in kills last season with 242 and first in blocks with 47. Setter Sanata Lewis returns for her sophomore season after leading the team in assists with 556.

Lewis and Takeba Dowden were both named to the All-SIAC Preseason Team and the team was picked to finish third in the SIAC Western Division.

This is the first meeting on the volleyball court between Tuskegee and St. Mary's.
SOUTHERN ARKANSAS

First-year head coach Lindsey Partridge takes over a Mulerider program that went 8-21 last season, but also returns six players who participated in at least 20 matches last year.

Junior Morgan Gross led the team with 219 kills last season, Sophomore setter Caitlin Murdock led the team in assists with 379 last season, while junior middle hitter Lauren Smith led the team in total blocks with 74.

The Muleriders were picked to finish tied for ninth in the Great American Conference preseason poll.

The Rattlers are 2-0 against the Muleriders in the all-time series, having last won in four sets in 2014.
