Taking over a program mid-season is never easy, but Stephanie Armstrong made it look that way, leading the Rattlers volleyball team to a Heartland Conference Championship in 2017 when she stepped up as the interim head coach. It was the team’s first title since 2010 and the interim tag was removed at the end of the year. The Rattlers were 12-5 that year with Armstrong pacing the sideline and 19-12 overall.

In 2018, the Rattlers ranked among the top three in the Heartland Conference statistics in kills, assists and aces and the team had an individual ranked in the top six in all six statistical categories, including freshman Alissa Tolbert who was second in service aces and fifth in points per set. The team ended the year 14-15 overall and posted an 8-4 mark in Heartland play, earning the two-seed at the conference tournament.

In her first season at the helm, Armstrong saw the Rattlers rank in the top 95 (of 303) of the NCAA in nine different statistical categories, including a team-high 74th in total team digs. Amongst the Heartland Conference teams, the Rattlers led the league in aces and were top three in assists, hitting percentage, kills and winning percentage.

Armstrong joined St. Mary’s from Vincennes University, where she was the head coach of the junior college in Indiana for two seasons. The 2017 team was 30-12, while the 2016 club was 29-9 overall, including a perfect 10-0 mark at home. Prior to becoming the Trailblazers' head coach, she spent two years as an assistant at Division III Franklin College.

A native of Ripon, California, Armstrong played at the collegiate level from 2008-2011 as a libero and coaching intern at Franklin & Marshall College (Lancaster, Pennsylvania). In 2010, she helped the Diplomats win the Centennial Conference Championship, earning a berth in the NCAA D-III National Tournament.
