LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Serena Frank and
Olivia Bachelet each scored a goal on Friday afternoon as the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team fell 3-2 to Colorado Christian University in their 2019 season opener.
It was a slow start for the Rattlers as Colorado Christian scored two goals within the first 21 minutes of the match to put St. Mary's in an early 2-0 hole. The Cougars added another goal to make it 3-0 just four minutes into the second half.
"We started off really slow today," said Head Coach
Corwyn Ritch. "It could have been nerves, the travel, first game of the year, or a number of other things but you cannot afford to start slow against a good team like Colorado Christian on the road."
Frank's goal came off a penalty kick at the 66-minute mark to cut the Rattler deficit to just two goals and just 12 minutes later off an assist from Frank, Bachelet tallied her first goal of the year but it was too little too late for St. Mary's.
"We made a great comeback and almost tied it up with a couple great chances but just missed," continued Ritch. "I hope we learn from this and come out strong against Metro State."
The Rattlers return to the pitch on Saturday as they take on Metropolitan State University of Denver at 2 p.m. central time.
