Rattlers set to face Midwestern State in NCAA D2 Round of 32

By Sarah Holden | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – St. Mary's claimed the Heartland Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Championship after an impressive 4-2 victory over No. 1 seed St. Edward's.

The Rattlers also had to outlast No. 3 seed Dallas Baptist University 4-0 en route to becoming the Heartland Conference Champions for the seventh straight season.

It will be a battle of conference champions, as St. Mary's prepares to face Lone Star Conference titlist Midwestern State University. The Round of 32 is set to take place on Monday, May 13 at the MSU Tennis Center. First Service for the South Central Region 1 final is set for 2 p.m.

The Rattles fell to the Mustangs 5-2 on Feb. 28 in Wichita Falls. This was the first win over St. Mary's for Midwestern State in the past five matches.

"I like this matchup for us," said Head Coach Lisa Dausin. "They caught us earlier in this season; but a lot has changed for us since then, including our lineup."

The Mustangs (20-6) earned an automatic bid by winning the Lone Star Conference Tournament, defeating UT Permian Basin, No. 27 Texas A&M Kingsville, and No. 34 Tarleton State.

The two regular season Heartland and Lone Star conference champions -- Angelo State and St. Edward's – will compete for the South Central Region 2 title, held on Monday in San Angelo. Both winners will advance to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships set for the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla. from May 22-25.

St. Mary's will make its seventh straight NCAA postseason appearance. The Rattlers have made NCAA Sweet 16 appearances every year since 2014. The Blue and Gold advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2016.
