Baseball battles Chaps, weather on Friday

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas – Runs came at a premium for the St. Mary's baseball team on Friday as they battled both the weather and the fourth-ranked Lubbock Christian Chaps at Hays Field. The Rattlers dropped both games of the doubleheader, 3-1 and 7-1 on the final weekend of the regular season.

St. Mary's is now 29-20 on the year and 9-11 in Heartland Conference play, while LCU is 35-12 overall and 16-4 in conference action. Weather wreaked havoc all over the league yesterday and most teams only played one game, if they played at all, so the Rattlers slipped to sixth place in the standings, as OC is still 9-9 and St. Edward's is 9-10. Only four teams make the end of the year tournament which begins May 9 in Cleburne, Texas.
The final game of the regular season is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Lubbock. Stay tuned to Rattlerathletics.com for updates on any changes.

El Paso juniors Patrick Fennell and Johnny Hernandez were the only Rattlers to get hits in both games. Fennell was 3-for-7 and scored one of the two runs, while freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) scored the other run. Hernandez and senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) had the RBIs for the Blue & Gold.

GAME ONE RECAP
The two teams combined for only eight hits in the seven inning contest as LCU scored three runs on five hits and StMU tallied one run on three hits with two Chap errors in a game that took just an hour and 45 minutes before the storms moved in and forced over a two-hour rain delay between the twinbill.

Lubbock Christian broke onto the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the first on three singles, but the Rattlers answered and knotted the score in the top of the fifth. Fennell led off with a single to third and moved to second when the third baseman overthrew first. He advanced to third on a groundout by senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) and scored on a terrific sacrifice bunt off the bat of Parrish where everyone was safe.
The Chaps regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs that would be the deciding factor in the game. A pair of walks, a single and a sacrifice fly proved to be the difference in a great first game.

Junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) took his first loss of the season, moving to 6-1. He gave up three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out six. Minister has struck out at least five in all five of his starts.

Ryan Johnson pitched the complete game for the Chaps, allowing three hits and no earned runs. He walked two and fanned four on 103 pitches to win a school record 13 consecutive starts.

GAME TWO RECAP
Game two started at 7:15 instead of the scheduled 5:00 p.m. due to rain and heavy winds in the area. The turf field soaked up the wetness quickly, allowing the teams to retake the field and play the nightcap.

The Rattlers threatened with base runners in every inning but the eighth, but were only able to push one across in the fifth, scoring one run on eight hits with two LCU errors, while Lubbock Christian scored seven runs on 12 hits with two StMU miscues.

A Chase Whetsel home run in the second inning opened the scoring for Lubbock Christian and they added another run in the third for the 2-0 lead.
The Rattlers answered with one run in the fifth to cut the lead in half. McGowen reached on a two-base error by the third baseman. With one out, Hernandez singled to left to plate McGowen.

LCU added one run in the seventh and four in the eighth for the 7-1 victory.

Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) got the start on the hill for the Rattlers, moving to 6-6 on the season. He pitched five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking four and fanning four. Senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) worked the next 2 2/3 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts, while junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio) pitched the final 1/3 of an inning, giving up two runs on one hit with four walks.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Andrew Perez had his incredible streak of reaching base streak of 26 games snapped in game one, but the junior bounced back with a double in game two to begin a new one. Perez had hits in 20 of those 26 games.
  • Mason Minister has recorded at least five strikeouts in all five of his starts this season. The junior has seven total appearances with at least five K's and now has 53 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings with just 19 walks, for a 2.8:1 strikeout to walk ratio.
  • Branson Hall recorded a season-high five strikeouts in game two. He had four K's in his first two appearances of the year against Arkansas Tech (Feb. 2) and Tarleton State (Feb. 9) and has struck out multiple batters in each of his last six outings.
  • Colton Parrish has done a great job of being a team player, recording four sacrifice bunts in the last seven games to almost double his season total to nine. He also has seven hits over that stretch and has raised his batting average from .238 to .253.
  • Johnny Hernandez has been hit by a pitch four times in the last six games and has now been struck 11 times this season, which is almost twice as much as any other Rattler. Ryan McGowen, Colton Parrish and Derek Mueller are next on the list with six plunks each.
  • Mario Vela extended his hitting streak to 11-straight games with a hit in game one before having it snapped in game two. During the 11 games, he recorded 16 hits and scored eight runs.
  • Patrick Fennell tallied his 12th multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-4 in the nightcap. He also leads the team with 11 multi-RBI contests in 2019.
TEAM NOTES
  • Both of the runs for the Rattlers came in the fifth inning as the team is now outscoring teams 54-24 in the fifth this season. The team has more runs in the fifth inning than in any other inning this year and the 30-run differential is the largest margin by 10 runs.
  • The Blue & Gold are also hitting .317 in the fifth inning, second to the .333 the club is hitting in the seventh frame this season, however in the fifth the team has 50 RBIs compared to just 26 in the 7th.
  • The team has drawn at least one walk in 14 straight games, dating back to the Rogers State game on April 5.
  • The 23 at bats in game one was the third-fewest for the team in a game this season, only to the 21 the team had twice (Mar 1 vs Lubbock Christian; Mar. 15 vs St. Edward's)
