Women’s Tennis ends season after tough loss in NCAA Regional

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The season that Head Women's Tennis Coach Lisa Dausin called "our toughest, arguably ever" has ended. St. Mary's said goodbye to national championship dreams after dropping a hard fought 4-3 Round of 32 match to Midwestern State University on Monday.
 
The battle for the NCAA South Central Regional began with the Maroon and Gold taking a 3-0 lead after capturing all of the doubles points and strong singles play. It started off shaky for the Rattlers after a difficult 6-1 loss at the No. 1 doubles position for senior Ally Maciel and Junior Isabelle Berman who faced No. 10 ranked Ashley Ramirez and Bianca Duff. Next up, senior duo Alex Corder and Hannah Petersen dropped a hard-fought 6-2 set to Greta Lazzarotto and Casie Curry. The No. 3 team of senior Rani Goodland and freshman Ashley Penshorn met their match in the Mustang's Lea Cizeron and Taylor Gray, but the set would go unfinished at 4-4.
 
Freshman Alice Thane led things off for the Rattlers as the competition turned to singles action. Thane would be swept in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to No. 62 Casie Curry. It was a tough start, as Goodland was also swept in straight sets.
 
But the Rattlers were not going to go down without a fight, as they fought back to draw even at 3-all. Things were starting to look up, as Coder defeated No. 66 ranked Greta Lazzarotto 6-4, 6-1. Penshorn followed suit, defeating the Mustang's Ashley Ramirez 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 singles position. No. 24 Maciel kept the momentum going, fighting back to take victory over Midwestern's Bianca Duff in three sets after falling 6-1 in the first.
 
It all came down to senior Hannah Petersen who faced Juliette Mary in a winner-take-all match at the No. 4 position. Mary took the victory in the first set, 6-4. With the pressure mounting, Petersen lashed out capturing a win in set two, 7-5. Mary forced Petersen to make the errors, going up 5-0. Petersen came back, but it would not be in time, as Midwestern would take a 6-4 win in the final set of the day.
 
MSU will advance to the Round of 16 held in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
 
Prior to this season, the Mustangs had not won a match against the Rattlers since March 29, 2014. Midwestern is still 0-2 when playing St. Mary's in San Antonio. The Blue and Gold's four-game win streak over MSU was snapped earlier this season in an away match held in February as the Rattlers fell 5-2.
 
The Round of 32 marks the end of the 2018-19 campaign for St. Mary's Women's Tennis. The Rattlers finished 14-8 overall.
