Rattlers drop close contest in Battle of the Saints

SAN ANTONIO - St. Mary's Women's Tennis fell in a close conference match against St. Edwards, 4-3 at Anne-Marie Tennis Center on Friday. 

The day started off with the women celebrating senior day, which included seniors; Rani Goodland, Ally Maciel, Hannah Petersen and Alex Corder. 

In doubles play, senior duo Hannah Petersen and Alex Corder quickly dominated their opponents 6-2 at the No.2 position. On the top court, Ally Maciel and Bella Bergman fell on a close battle, 6-4 against Beth Hayward and Valentina Martinez. The clinch came down to court No. 3 with freshman Ashley Penshorn and senior Rani Goodland were 4-0 down in the set, the duo were able to claw there way back to 5-5. Unfortunately, Penshorn and Goodland were unable to pull out the match, dropping the set 7-5 and St. Edwards claiming the doubles point. 

In singles action, it was a tight contest. Ashley Penshorn was quick to even out the playing field winning 6-0 6-2, bringing the match back to 1-1. Senior Hannah Petersen and junior Bella Bergman fell in straight sets at the No.3 and No.5, bringing the match to 3-1 to the Goats. 

Senior Ally Maciel won 6-4 6-2 on the top court and Alex Corder brought the match back to 3-3, winning in straight sets 6-3 7-5 on court No. 2. 

The clinch for the match came down to court No. 4. Senior Rani Goodland was in a tight contest, splitting sets with Laura Galvan. Goodland was unable to pull out the match, dropping the third set 6-1.

The Rattles hit the road and will play against Texas A&M Kingsville on Wednesday April 17th.
