No. 35 Rattlers fall to No. 31 Javelinas in close contest, 4-3

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team dropped a close battle against Texas A&M Kingsville on Wednesday at the Javelinas home courts, 4-3.

The afternoon began with doubles play, where unfortunately the Rattlers were unable to secure the doubles point. On the top court, senior duo Alex Corder and Hannah Petersen had a tough contest against No. 46 ranked Lisa Carvajal and Maya Donkor, dropping the set 6-1. On court No. 2, Ally Maciel and Isabelle Bergman were able to secure a win, winning a close match 6-4. On court No. 3, Penshorn and Goodland dropped the match 6-2, which clinched for Kingsville, giving them a 1-0 lead.

Going into singles play, the Javelinas were quick to take advantage of another point on court No. 6, defeating Alice Thane 6-1 6-2. On court No. 5, freshmen Ashley Penshorn was able to get the Rattlers first point, sweeping her opponent 7-5 6-3. Petersen fell in a tough contest on court No. 2 in a three-set battle, dropping the third 6-1.

The Javelinas were leading 3-1 overall. Senior Rani Goodland defeated her opponent 6-3 7-6 (2) on court No. 3, bringing the score to 3-2. Senior Ally Maciel at the No. 1 position was able to bring the Lady Rattlers back to 3-3, dominating Thep Philavong in a close match 6-4 7-5.

Last on the court, for the clinch, was Isabella Bergman on court No. 4. Junior Bergman was in a tight contest, dropping the first set 7-6 (4). Unfortunately, Bergman was unable to pull out the match, falling in the a close second set 7-5.
