Perez, Hernandez have big days as Rattlers take 2 from TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas — Andrew Perez drove in eight runs and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle as St. Mary's Baseball erupted offensively in Friday's doubleheader against Texas A&M International.

Perez's big game came in a series-opening 13-5 victory, which the Rattlers added to with a 12-11 triumph in the nightcap to improve to 12-8 on the season.

Perez was 5 for 5 with eight RBI and two runs scored in the opener, recording a home run, a double and three singles. His eight RBI marked the third most ever recorded in a game in school history, and the most in nearly 12 years since Michael Pawelek drove in eight runs against Lincoln on May 5, 2007.

Patrick Fennell also drove in multiple runs in the game (two), and added a solo home run in the fourth inning.

St. Mary's trailed 1-0 early after giving up a leadoff home run to TAMIU's Andrew Holsey, but the Rattlers responded with a four-run third inning to take a 4-1 advantage. St. Mary's never trailed again on the day, and added five more runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a commanding 12-3 lead in Game 1.

Zach De La Garza earned the victory to improve to 4-2 on the year with seven strikeouts over five innings pitched.

In the nightcap, it was Johnny Hernandez's turn to have the big game, as the second baseman was 4 for 4 with five RBI and two runs scored. His second-inning solo home run put the Snakes on the board first, which Scott Short and Colton Parrish added to with an RBI each. Leading 3-0, St. Mary's tacked on two more in the third for an early 5-0 advantage.

TAMIU clawed back into the game, but a four-run sixth inning gave the Rattlers a 10-4 lead that ultimately proved enough in the 12-11 victory.

Scott Short also homered in the game and finished with two RBI, while Connor Schmidt got the victory with five solid innings of work.

The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday.
