Rattlers finish off series sweep of TAMIU

St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas — A new day, and a new big bat emerges in the Rattlers' lineup.

Ryan McGowen drove in five runs to help St. Mary's complete the series sweep of Texas A&M International in a 12-5 victory Saturday afternoon. The triumph came hours after the Rattlers took down the Dustdevils 8-1 in the front end of a doubleheader.

McGowen jumpstarted the Rattlers by putting them ahead 4-3 with a two-RBI single that capped off a four-run fourth inning. He finished the nightcap 3 for 5 with five RBI and a run scored.

Jake Mares added two RBI on a 2-for-6 outing, while Derek Mueller also drove in a pair of runs while going 2 for 4. Andrew Perez, one of the stars from Friday's action, drove in a run on two hits.

On the mound, Mason Minister improved to 2-0 on the season with a workmanlike seven-strikeout performance while scattering 10 hits.

In Game 1, Perez and Mario Vela led the way with two RBI apiece.

Unlike in the nightcap, where the Rattlers trailed out of the gate, the Snakes (14-8) jumped on TAMIU (6-13) early in Game 2. Vela drove in a pair of runs in the first inning on a fielder's choice. Perez drove in two more on a fielder's choice of his own in the fourth.

St. Mary's jumped to an 8-0 advantage before finally yielding their first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jacob Koehler went the distance, earning his first victory of the season. He struck out four and pitched a three-hitter.

St. Mary's returns to action on Friday for the start of a three-game "Battle of the Saints" series against St. Edward's. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
