Women's basketball wins regular season finale

LAREDO, Texas – The St. Mary's women's basketball team ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Texas A&M International 69-58 on Saturday afternoon to earn the third seed at the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament.

The Rattlers end the regular season with a 17-9 overall record and a 7-7 Heartland Conference mark and will face UAFS in the first round of the last-ever Heartland Tournament on Friday, March 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center. The game will begin at approximately 5 p.m.

Senior guard Arysia Porter (San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 12 points, a career-high eight assists and three steals, junior guard Alexia Torres (San Antonio) posted 11 points and tied her season-highs with six rebounds and three steals. Both sophomores Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) and Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) scored 10 points and Banks also chipped in three steals, while Wilson tied for team-high honors with six caroms. All nine Rattlers scored at least two points and had at least one rebound in the victory.

Alliyah Bryant and Christine Ortega led the Dust Devils (0-26, 0-14 Heartland) with 10 points each, while Kendall Alsup came off the bench to lead the game with 13 rebounds. Tacoya Allen had a game-high four assists and Ortega and Allen each had two steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Banks kicked off the game with a three-pointer and TAMIU answered with a layup, but the Rattlers scored the next six points, including back-to-back layups by Wilson for the 9-2 lead. The Dust Devils scored the next eight to take a one-point lead, 10-9, but the Rattlers immediately answered with a layup by Wilson to regain the advantage. The next seven points went to TAMIU for the 17-11 tally, but Torres stopped the streak with a pair of free throws at the 4:30 mark to bring the Rattlers within four, 17-13. Senior Crystal Thomas (San Antonio) made a layup and Porter nailed a three to give the lead back to the Blue & Gold at the 2:02 point, 18-17. Porter then made a traditional three-point play with 1:32 on the clock for the final points of the quarter for the 21-17 score.

The Rattlers scored the first five points of the second quarter to open up a nine-point advantage, 26-17. After seven straight by the Devils, Torres nailed a three with 4:18 remaining to push the lead back out to five and Thomas followed with a jumper for the 31-24 tally. The teams traded baskets and the Devils hit one of two free throws. Walla sank a pair of her own at the charity stripe with 1:13 remaining for an eight-point lead, 35-27 and with 20 ticks on the clock, TAMIU made a final layup for the 35-29 halftime score.

Walla and Wilson made back-to-back layups to begin the third quarter and give the Rattlers a 10-point advantage. TAMIU hit a three-pointer and Porter scored the next four to push the lead to 11, 43-32 at 7:06. After a Dust Devils free throw, the Rattlers scored five straight for a 15-point advantage – their largest of the game – 48-33. TAMIU scored six straight, including four at the free throw line, but sophomore Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) sank another pair of free throws for the Rattlers for the 50-39 score. The teams exchanged triples and a TAMIU layup ended the third quarter with the score 53-44.

The Rattlers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to push the lead out to 14, 58-44 and after a layup by TAMIU, Banks hit a triple for the 15-point lead. The teams traded jumpers and after a Dust Devils three, the schools again exchanged baskets for the 65-53 tally. Sophomore Audrey Wandji (Houston, Texas) made a layup and the Dust Devils scored five straight to cut it to nine, 67-58, but with 19 seconds left, Porter made a pair of free throws for the final points of the game, 69-58.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Alexia Torres tied her season high in both rebounds – with six – and steals – with three. She ties her rebound high of six from the game against Central Missouri from Nov. 23 and her steal total from Rogers State on Jan. 24.
  • Torres was also just one point off her career-high of 12 from Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 16.
  • Senior Arysia Porter has scored in double figures in seven straight games and in 14 of her 19 this year.
  • Porter also recorded a career-best eight assists in the win over TAMIU, breaking her previous career-high of seven from last season against the Dust Devils on Feb. 24.
  • Soteria Banks has scored eight or more points in the last 10 games and in 17 of the last 18. The last time she failed to score at least eight was at Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 31.
  • Sophomore Jessica Barbosa made her return to the lineup tonight after missing 11 games. Barbosa played six minutes, scoring two points with two rebounds, two fouls and a turnover.
TEAM NOTES
  • All nine players who played for the Rattlers scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound.
  • All seven free throw misses for the Rattlers were on the front end of a two shot attempt, giving the team seven deadball rebounds in the game. The team was perfect in one-and-one situations and on the second attempts.
  • The Rattlers out-rebounded the Dust Devils 38-to-34. It is the first time in five games the Blue & Gold have grabbed more boards than the opposition, but it's the 15th time overall they've collected more caroms.
  • The 18 free throws made in the game is the third-highest total this season, trailing only the 24 against then-#1 Central Missouri and 20 against Cameron. It is the highest amount of makes on the road, bettering the 15 from against Tarleton State on Nov. 10.
  • Tonight marked the sixth time this season the Rattlers have recorded 10 or more assists in a game, as they had 13 – which is a season-high. The previous best was 12 against Southern Nazarene on Nov. 17.
