LCU pulls away late from @StMUmbb

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's Men's Basketball ran out of gas down the stretch against Lubbock Christian on Thursday night, as the Chaps prevailed 76-70 on the heels of a 9-2 run that opened a seven-point lead in the waning seconds.

Caleb Jordan played all 40 minutes and led the Rattlers with 22 points, falling two short of his career-high 24 set last month against Newman. Fellow freshman Dylan Isenhower added a career-high eight rebounds for the young Rattlers (10-12, 2-8).

St. Mary's defense held the Chaps without a field goal for the final 2:33, but Lubbock Christian (15-7, 6-4) did its damage from the free-throw line to pull away. LCU connected on 87.1 percent from the charity stripe, going 27 of 31 for the evening.

The Rattlers featured a nine-man rotation, but their all-freshmen backcourt of Jordan and Timmy Benavides never left the floor. Benavides' 40 minutes marked his second consecutive game of going the distance, as he finished with six assists. Last week, he logged a career-high seven dishes after playing all 45 minutes in an overtime loss to DBU.

Jordan sank a pair free throws to tie the game at 65-65 with 4:05 remaining, but then LCU went on a 9-2 tear to lead 74-67 with 22 ticks left.

St. Mary's shot 38.9 percent from the floor in the second half after shooting 48.1 percent in the first.

The Rattlers will be back in action on Valentine's Day next Thursday, when they host Newman on "Date Night" at Bill Greehey Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
