CLAREMORE, Okla. – Despite a second-straight double-double from senior Arysia Porter, the St. Mary's women's basketball team couldn't hold onto a seven-point halftime lead and fell 72-66 at Rogers State on Thursday evening. The Rattlers are now 16-8 on the year and 6-6 in Heartland Conference play.

Porter, a guard from San Antonio, scored 13 points, tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds, led the team with five assists and added two steals, while senior guard Kaitlin Walla (Georgetown, Texas) tied for game-high honors with 19 points after sinking four three-pointers. Sophomore guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) also scored in double figures with 15 and chipped in three assists.

Desiree Nelson led Rogers State (12-12, 5-6 Heartland Conference) with 19 points, while Carlye Bohannan added 16 points and a game-high seven assists. Lauren Schuldt led the game with 11 boards and three blocked shots.

How It Happened
The Hillcats scored the first six points of the game before sophomore Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) got the Rattlers on the board with a layup. After a three-pointer by Rogers State, the Rattlers scored the next nine, with six of those coming from Porter to give StMU a two-point lead, 11-9 with 4:02 to play. RSU tied the score with a layup, but Porter hit a pair of free throws at the 2:33 mark and Banks hit her second three-pointer of the night for the 16-11 lead with 1:56 to play. RSU sank another three and junior Alexia Torres (San Antonio) closed out the quarter with two free throws for the 18-14 score.

Rogers State opened the second quarter with a triple to cut the Rattlers lead to one, 18-17, but Torres made a layup to stretch the lead back to three, 20-17. The Hillcats tied the game for the third time, hitting another three-pointer, and Walla answered with her first of four in the game. After an RSU layup, Walla scored on a traditional three-point play. RSU hit a jumper and sophomore Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) hit her first triple of the contest for a five-point lead, 29-24 with 3:59 to play. The teams traded baskets and Porter sank a three-pointer for the eight-point advantage, 34-26 with 2:40 remaining. After one free throw by the Hillcats, Culiver hit her second triple of the night for a 10-point lead – the largest of the game for the Rattlers – 37-27 with 32 ticks on the clock. With six seconds left, RSU sank another triple for the 37-30 halftime tally. Porter scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half of the game.

The first four points of the third quarter went in favor of the Hillcats, but the Rattlers answered with the next four. The teams traded three-pointers and after an RSU free throw, Banks made a layup for an eight-point lead with 3:56 left. The Hillcats sank back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to two for the Rattlers, 46-44, but Banks answered with a pair of free throws to stretch the lead back to four, 48-44. Rogers State scored the next five to take the lead with 39 seconds left and Banks once again had the answer, knocking down a three-pointer to give the Rattlers back the lead, 51-49 with 24 seconds remaining, but once again the Hillcats were able to hit a three-pointer as time ran down to end the third with a 52-51 lead.

The clubs traded baskets to open the final stanza and Rogers scored the next five to build a six-point lead, 59-53 with 6:50 left. Sophomore Audrey Wandji (Houston, Texas) stopped the streak with a jumper in the paint and Porter followed with a layup to make it a two-point game, 59-57, but the Hillcats scored six of the next eight for a six-point lead, 65-59 with 3:44 remaining. Walla hit another three to cut that lead in half, but RSU again scored four straight for the 69-62 advantage with 1:13 left. Wilson made a free throw and Walla followed with a triple to cut it again to a three-point game with 31 seconds left, 69-66, but the Rattlers missed their last three shots and the Hillcats made three free throws during the last 30 seconds for the 72-66 final. Walla scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Individual Player Notes
  • The 13 points and 11 rebounds is Arysia Porter's fourth double-double of the year and the 13th of her career. It is the second time in her career she's posted double-doubles in back-to-back games as she also did so last season against Rogers State (2/15/18) and UAFS (2/17/18).
  • With her two free throws made, Porter moved into eighth on the career chart with 243 makes, passing Charlena Rodez (242, 2003-2007).
  • Soteria Banks has scored in double figures in five straight games and in 15 games this season.
  • Kaitlin Walla has made three or more three-pointers in 12 of her 24 starts this season and has made at least one triple in the last eight games and in 23 of 24 games this year.
  • Alexia Torres has at least one steal in each of the last six games and recorded the 75 steal of her career in tonight's game.
Team Notes
  • St. Mary's shot 88.9 percent from the free throw line (8-for-9), the ninth time this year the team has shot better than 75 percent from the charity stripe in a game (minimum five attempts).
  • The Rattlers have either had the same amount or more steals than each of their last eight opponents. St. Mary's has 159 steals on the year, while opponents have 163, but in the last eight games the Rattlers have swiped 58 compared to just 34 for the opposition.
  • The Rattlers have alternated wins and losses over their last six games.
  • St. Mary's made 10 three-pointers in the game. It is the sixth time this year the team has made double figure triples in a contest, and the second-straight game.
