CONROE, Texas – On the first day of the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational, the St. Mary's softball team went 1-1 at the Scrap Yard. They opened the 2019 season against #9 Texas A&M Commerce, falling 2-1, then bounced back to defeat #14 Tarleton State 3-1 on a drizzly day.

Tomorrow the Rattlers square off against Augustana at 3:30 p.m. before playing both Washburn at 11:30 a.m. and West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Game One Recap
It took until the sixth inning before someone broke onto the scoreboard, but when they did it was in a big way. On the first pitch of the at bat, Rattlers senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) homered to left field to lead off the bottom of the frame for her second hit of the game.

In the top of the seventh inning, Texas A&M Commerce answered with two runs to take the lead. Kayla Kilcrease led off with a single down the right field line then with one out and a 1-2 count, Bri Sims hit a home run to left field for the win.

Salinas had both hits in the game for the Rattlers, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. She also led the team with four assists in the field at the short stop position.
Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) pitched the complete game for St. Mary's, allowing two runs on four hits, walking none and striking out four. The 2018 Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year threw 100 pitches over the seven innings and hit one batter.

Emily Otto pitched the complete game for Commerce, allowing one run on two hits, walking no one and striking out seven. She threw 85 pitches and also hit one batter (Abigale Carney).

Game Two Recap
St. Mary's didn't waste any time scoring in the second game of the day. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) walked to begin the contest in the top of the first and advanced to second on a groundout by freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas). With one out, Johns singled to centerfield, scoring Nash to give the Rattlers the early 1-0 lead. Johns moved to second on a fielding error by the center fielder, but she was stranded at second base.

Tarleton State evened the score in the bottom of the second inning. The TexAnns loaded the bases without a hit after a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. With one out, Lexi Grimaldo hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Gracie King.

In the top of the fifth, sophomore Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) singled to left field. Freshman Mikayla Briggs (San Antonio) came in to pinch run for Cerda and promptly stole second base. After a seven pitch at bat, Salinas reached on a fielder's choice. She stole second base and then scored when the catcher overthrew second, giving the Rattlers the 2-1 advantage.

Senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) led off the top of the seventh with a walk, Nash singled to right field and Aldridge walked to load the bases with no outs. With one out, a wild pitch scored Camacho for the 3-1 score. The Rattlers retired the TexAnns in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory and even their season record at 1-1.

Junior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) pitched a complete game in the circle for the Rattlers, allowing one run on one hit. She walked two and struck out seven in 94 pitches thrown.

Nash went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base, while junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) was 1-for-2 with a walk and a pair of steals. Both Cerda and Johns were 1-for-3 and Salinas and Camacho scored runs. The Rattlers stole five bases and drew six walks in the game.
