HOUSTON, Texas – The St. Mary's baseball team won a crooked victory in its first game of the season, defeating Central Missouri 12-5 in the Houston Winter Invitational. The Rattlers posted multiple run innings in the first and the seventh innings, scoring their 12 runs on 11 hits with no errors, while the Mules got their five runs on six hits and they committed three errors. Both teams left seven runners on base.

Junior college transfer Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) made an immediate mark on the program, going 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and a home run. Both junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) and junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) each scored two runs after going 1-for-4. Eight different Rattlers accounted for the 11 hits, while eight crossed home plate.

Junior left-handed pitcher Zach De La Garza (San Antonio), the Heartland Conference preseason starting pitcher of the year, earned the win after pitching five innings. He allowed three runs on three hits, walking four and striking out four. Junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) threw the final four innings for the Rattlers. He gave up two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out six.

The Mules used seven hurlers in the contest with no one lasting longer than two frames. Ben Kelsch started on the hill, allowing six runs, one earned in two innings of work, on three hits with three walks and one strike out.

Donovan Ditto went 2-for-4 at the plate for Central Missouri with one RBI, while Erik Webb had three RBIs after going 1-for-4 with a stolen base. Leadoff hitter Mason Janvrin was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run scored.

In the first inning, junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) and senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) walked to start things off. Reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Year Donnie Perez (San Antonio) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on the play. Parrish was safe on a throwing error by the second baseman and continued on to score, as did Mueller, giving the Rattlers the early 2-0 lead. Junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) walked and A. Perez bunted, reaching on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and second with one out. Hernandez doubled to left center for the team's first hit of the year, plating both Milford and A. Perez to put the Rattlers up 4-0. Junior Steven Wynn (San Antonio) followed with a single on a 1-0 count to centerfield to score Hernandez and make the score 5-0.

After De La Garza retired the side in order, the Rattlers offense got back to work in the top of the second and put one more on the scoreboard when D. Perez hit a home run to left center with two outs on a 2-2 count for the 6-0 tally.

In the top of the third, Central Missouri went to the bull pen, bringing in Bryce Kearns. With one out, Caskey promptly homered to left center to stretch the lead to 7-0. Hernandez doubled to left and with two outs, senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) reached on a throwing error by the short stop on a bunt, putting Rattler runners on the corners, but the pair was stranded.

With one out and one on in the bottom of the third, Erik Webb hit a home run over the left field fence to give Central Missouri two runs and make the score 7-2. The Mules added one more run in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back walks, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out to short stop.
The Rattlers immediately answered in their half of the fifth when Hernandez recorded his third hit of the game, this one a long ball over the left field wall on a 2-0 count for the 8-3 score.

Hernandez kept his hot bat going, plating another run in the seventh. D. Perez led off the inning with a four pitch walk and moved up 90 feet when Caskey also drew a walk. Hernandez singled through the left side, scoring Perez and advancing Caskey to second. The Mules again went to the bullpen, bringing in Collin Jones to pitch. The runners both advanced a base on a wild pitch and Caskey scored on a Vela single to right field. With two outs, Parrish singled to center and advanced to second on the play. Vela moved to third and scored on a fielding error by the centerfielder and Hernandez scored to make the score 12-3. The Mules replaced Jones with Tyler Kuhlmann and he got out of the inning without any further damage.
The Mules managed to plate two in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to sustain a long rally to pull back within reach and lost 12-5. Hon got the final batter to strike out after a six-pitch at bat, stranding two on the base paths.

Tomorrow, the Rattlers square off against Arkansas Tech at 5 p.m. and the team closes the tournament against Tarleton State on Sunday, also at 5 p.m. St. Mary's will open the home season on Friday, February 8 against the Texans at 3 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
