SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Basketball continued Lone Star Conference play with a 96-77 loss against No. 3 West Texas A&M on Saturday night at University of the Incarnate Word.
Freshman
Jaron Presley led the Rattlers with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, to reach a new career high in just 16 minutes of play. Senior
Matej Gaspert was close behind with 19 points, while also leading the team in rebounds with seven.
Caleb Jordan,
Markques Houston and
Curtlon Wesley rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points each.
The Rattlers never led in the game, with the Buffs jumping out to a 14-2 lead and never looking back. St. Mary's brought it back within single digits, 22-13, on a pair of free throws from Wesley, but were unable to cut the lead any shorter. West Texas led by 19, 50-31, at halftime, and then in the second half, a 3-pointer gave the Buffs their first 20-point lead with 11 minutes left in the game. It wasn't until Presley hit back-to-back threes in the final minute of the game that St. Mary's was able to cut the deficit to under 20 points, eventually losing by 19.
The team gets a chance to try and turn things around quickly with a game at home in Bill Greehey Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 against Bethany College.
