SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with an 85-84 upset over No. 14 Colorado School of Mines in overtime on the road Friday.
Caleb Jordan had 17 of his 21 points in the first half to spark the Rattler offense, and
Markques Houston added 20 points on the night to help secure the win.
Kobe Magee contributed all around with 11 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals, while
Matej Gaspert put up team-highs of eight rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore
Dylan Isenhower had a career-high 17 points on 7-10 shooting.
The Orediggers came back from being down 19 points at the half to tie the game at 74 with 1:25 left in the game. The Rattlers went on a 6-0 run to go up 80-74 to start the overtime period and never again trailed. Houston hit a clutch 3-pointer with 23 seconds left and Jordan hit a pair of free throws to maintain the lead, despite two 3-pointers from the Orediggers in the final seconds.
The game was close early, with the teams tied 9-9 five minutes into the first half. Jordan then scored 10 of the Rattlers' next 12 points to carve out a 21-14 advantage. The lead continued to grow for the Rattlers, reaching its peak just before the half as Isenhower completed an and-one to make it 47-28 at the break. St. Mary's was able to maintain its double-digit lead to start the second half, but the Orediggers went on a 30-13 run over the final 12 minutes of the game to force overtime, where the Rattlers eventually came out on top.
