Free Throws Late Hurt Women's Hoops For Second-Straight Night

By Heather Kennedy, RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – For the second-straight night, turnovers and missed free throws proved costly as the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team dropped a 64-58 decision to Southern Nazarene in the finale of the StMU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday evening.

The loss moves the Rattlers to 2-4 on the season, while the Storm – who are receiving votes in this week's WBCA Coaches poll – improve to 5-1 overall. In the first game of the day, #1/2 Lubbock Christian defeated RV Central Oklahoma in a thrilling 68-63 overtime contest.

The Rattlers outshot the Storm in the contest, connecting on 44 percent from the field (22-of-50) and 42.9 percent from the three-point line (6-for-14), but made just 57.1 percent from the free throw line (8-of-14). SNU shot 41.2 percent for the game (21-for-51), 35.3 from beyond the arc (6-for-17) and 64 percent from the free throw line (16-for-25). They also made 8-for-14 from the charity stripe in the last quarter, while StMU was just 3-of-8.

For the fourth time this season, junior guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) topped the 20-point mark, scoring 21 points – 19 of which came in the second half. Junior forward Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. The pair also blocked two shots each. Lone senior Alexia Torres (San Antonio) scored a season-high seven points and tied for the 10th most assists in a single-game in school history with eight, tying for game-high honors. Junior Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) led the team with three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Nazarene jumped out to the early 9-0 lead before the Rattlers broke onto the scoreboard with a three-pointer by Culiver. The teams traded baskets before the Storm scored back-to-back buckets and with three seconds left in the quarter, junior Jessica Barbosa (Bissai, Guinea Bissai) made the final basket for the 15-7 tally.

The Rattlers scored the first six of the second quarter to cut the deficit to two points, 15-13, but the Storm stopped the streak with a three-pointer to push their lead back to five, 18-13. Wilson nailed a pair of free throws and SNU responded with another triple for the 21-15 score. Another six-point run by the Rattlers tied the score at 21-21, but the Storm immediately answered with four straight to maintain the advantage. The teams exchanged baskets and Torres nailed a three for the final basket of the half to take the Rattlers into the locker room trailing by one, 27-26.

SNU scored the first three after the break, but a quick five-point run by the Rattlers saw the first lead change of the game and a 31-30 St. Mary's lead. The Storm answered with their own five-point run which was snapped by a jumper from Banks for the 35-33 SNU lead. After four straight by the Storm, Banks hit another jumper for the 39-35 score. SNU made a pair of free throws before StMU scored three straight and the teams went back-and-forth until Banks made almost a half-court shot at the buzzer of the third quarter for the 47-43 score.

Freshman Bella Hughes (Argyle, Texas) cut the deficit to one with a triple to start the final stanza and a free throw by Banks knotted the score at 47-47 for the second tie of the game, but the Storm maintained the lead with two free throws. A three-pointer by Banks gave the Rattlers a short lead, 50-49, however SNU got it right back with a layup. Hughes knotted the score at 51-51 with a free throw and the teams traded buckets for the fourth tie of the night at 53-53 with 4:14 remaining. The Rattlers took the lead for the final time on a Banks jumper with 3:16 left, but a triple by the Storm lifted them to the 56-55 lead and they held on the final 2:40, making six of eight from the free throw line for the 64-58 win.
