Women's Basketball Hangs Tough With UTEP In Exhibition

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

EL PASO, Texas – In the team's lone exhibition game of the season, the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team dropped a close battle at UTEP, 59-47.

Freshman Bella Hughes (Argyle, Texas) led the Rattlers with 14 points, hitting three three-pointers on the afternoon – as she was one of three to hit multiple triples for the Gold & Blue. Both juniors Mya Culver (Rockwall, Texas) and Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) added 10 points each. Point guard Alexia Torres (San Antonio) led the team with seven assists and five rebounds, while both Banks and freshman Tonia Bilic (Zagreb, Croatia) each blocked one shot and Banks, Hughes and junior Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) each tallied two steals to tie for the team lead.

This is the fourth-consecutive season the two teams have met in an exhibition game to kick off the Rattlers season. St. Mary's is now 1-3 in those contests, winning the 2017 tilt.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Culver hit the opening basket of the 2019-20 season for the Rattlers – a three-pointer for the early lead. After a pair of free throws for the Miners, Culver drained another triple to give the Gold & Blue a 6-2 advantage, but UTEP used a 9-0 run for the 11-6 lead. Barbosa made one free throw and Hughes made a three to cut the deficit to one, 11-10, but UTEP closed the quarter on an 8-0 run for the 19-10 score.

The Miners opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and after a quick 30-second timeout, the Rattlers hit three consecutive three-pointers to cut it to a three-point game, 22-19. The teams traded buckets throughout the remainder of the quarter to enter the locker rooms at halftime with the score 32-25 UTEP.

Torres hit a jumper to open the third quarter and UTEP used an 8-0 run to open a 13-point lead, 40-27. The teams traded baskets and the Rattlers answered with an 8-0 run of their own to close within five, 42-37. UTEP hit a bucket with seven seconds left in the quarter so the scoreboard read 44-37.

Wilson scored six of the first eight points of the fourth quarter as the Rattlers cut the deficit to three, 46-43. UTEP answered with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 10, 53-43 and StMU scored the next four off the strength of a Hughes triple. The Miners closed the game on a 6-0 run for the 59-47 final.
