Women's Basketball Wins Big At Arbor Hotels Classic

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

LUBBOCK, Texas – Leading almost wire to wire, the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team defeated Colorado-Colorado Springs 70-58 at the Arbor Hotels Classic to improve to 1-1 on the young season.

Junior guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) once again had a stellar game for the Rattlers, leading all scorers with 23 points -- including a perfect 5-for-5 night from the three-point line and she had the team's only blocked shot of the contest. Freshman Sydney Hardman (Allen, Texas) added 11 points, scoring in double figures for the second-straight game. Junior center Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) led the team with nine rebounds and three steals, while junior Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) had a game-high five assists.

The Rattlers shot 44.6 percent from the field for the game and 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from the three-point line. The team was also 10-for-16 from the free throw line for 62.5 percent. The Gold & Blue held the Mountain Lions to 32.5 percent shooting for the game and 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from beyond the arc. StMU trailed for only six seconds during the game as UCCS made the first basket of the game, but Banks answered with a three-pointer and gave the Rattlers the lead for good.

The Rattlers led by as many as 21 points, 65-44, with 5:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, and they got great production from the bench – with 29 points. In fact, 10 of the 11 players who saw action scored at least one point and nine of the 11 pulled down one or more rebounds. Eight different Rattlers also tallied an assist in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mountain Lions struck first, with a layup at the 8:37 mark, but just six seconds later Banks sank her first three-pointer to give the Rattlers a lead they'd never relinquish. The teams traded baskets and Banks drained another triple to begin an 11-0 run for the Rattlers, which included four points by senior guard Alexia Torres (San Antonio), two free throws by freshman Briley Perkins (Houston, Texas) and a basket by freshman Tonia Bilic (Zagreb, Croatia) for the 16-4 tally. After UCCS snapped the streak with a jumper in the paint, the Rattlers got right back to work as Banks and Hardeman drained back-to-back long balls for a 16-point lead, 22-6 with 1:52 left in the quarter.       The Mountain Lions hit a pair of three's to end the quarter with the score 22-12.

UCCS opened the second quarter with its third-straight triple to cut the deficit to seven, 22-15, but the Rattlers used a 6-0 run over the next 4:30 to push their lead back to 13, 28-15 with 5:11 left in the half. The Mountain Lions made a layup at the 4:55 mark and then neither team scored for over two minutes, when Bilic stole the ball and was fouled on a breakaway layup. She made the second free throw for the 29-17 score. The teams traded buckets and UCCS went on a 7-0 run to cut the Rattlers lead to five, 31-26 with 1:08 to go, but Banks hit back-to-back three's in the waning minute to extend the advantage back to double digits, 37-26. At the buzzer, UCCS sank a layup for the 37-28 tally.

Banks made the first bucket of the third quarter, a layup, and UCCS answered with a three-pointer for the 39-31 score. The Rattlers went on a 14-2 run for the 20-point advantage, 53-33, but the Mountain Lions closed the quarter on an 8-0 run of their own to cut it to a 12-point contest, 53-41.

The Rattlers scored the first five points of the final stanza with a three by Perkins and a jumper by Wilson for the 58-41 lead. UCCS scored on a traditional three-point play and with 7:02 left, Banks scored her final basket of the night for 23 points and the 60-44 lead, kicking off a 7-0 run for the Gold & Blue.  After another three-point play by the Mountain Lions, the teams traded points to 69-51 with 3:10 remaining. Freshman McKenzie Piper (Irving, Texas) made one free throw for the final StMU point and UCCS scored the final seven points for the 70-58 final score.
