Men's Soccer Earns First Lone Star Victory Over DBU

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team stays unbeaten at Sigma Beta Chi Field as they defeated Dallas Baptist University by a score of 3-2. The Rattlers are now 4-0 on the season on their home turf.

The Rattlers (4-2-1, 1-1) did not waste any time getting on the board as Ollie Wright converted an early penalty kick opportunity, sliding one just under the crossbar to put St. Mary's up 1-0 just four minutes into the match.

DBU (2-6, 0-2) found the equalizer just two minutes later as Abraham Garcia took advantage of a St. Mary's mishap to even the match at one goal apiece.

St. Mary's saw the ball hit the back of the net in the 33rd minute as Edu Toiny-Pendred settled a long ball from Lewis Wilson, maneuvered around a defender, and beat the keeper just inside the near post, giving the Rattlers a 2-1 lead, a lead that stood until halftime.

Wright continued to make his presence known against the Patriots as he picked up an assist on a rocket from Carlos Blasco to put the Gold and Blue in front, 3-1 with just over 20 minutes left to play.

The Patriots didn't go away quietly as they got within a goal in the 84th minute when Brandon Torres buried a rebounds off a Jacob Sayle save to make it a 3-2 match.

St. Mary's controlled the final six minutes of the game and secured their first Lone Star Conference victory of the season.

Wright's performance earned him tonight's Pizza Patron Player of the Game honor. He finished with a goal and an assist in the victory.

The Rattlers will host St. Edward's on Saturday evening at Sigma Beta Chi Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
