Men's basketball holds on to snap four-game skid

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – As they seem to most games this year, the St. Mary's men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon came down to the wire, but this time they were able to hang on for the win, defeating Arkansas-Fort Smith 76-73 to improve to 10-9 on the season on 2-5 in Heartland Conference play.

This was the eighth game this season decided by five or fewer points and the Rattlers are now 4-4 in those contests. Two of the last four games have also been decided in overtime.

The Rattlers led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but the Lions (8-12, 2-6 Heartland) chipped away throughout the second, cutting the lead down to one twice -- including the final time with 50 seconds remaining -- but they were never able to take the lead away from the Blue & Gold. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for St. Mary's.

The Rattlers had a balanced scoring attack with four players hitting double figures and two others notching eight. Freshman guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) led with 14, while both senior guard Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) and freshman guard Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) added 13 and junior forward Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) chipped in 12. The 13 points for Isenhower is a career-high, more than doubling his previous best of five points from two different games. Senior forwards Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) and Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) each scored eight, while junior forward Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, almost doubling his previous best of six. Jordan scored in double figures for the seventh straight game, led the contest with five assists and he and Isenhower each had two steals.

For the second straight game, the Rattlers dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Lions 46 to 29. It is the ninth time this year StMU has had a +10 or better margin in rebounding and the fifth time they've been +15 or better.

UAFS was led by Chris Crawford with 22 points, six assists and three steals, Seth Hawley with 16 points and Tyler Williams with 14 points and four rebounds. Matt Morgan and David Ekezie each had four rebounds as well.

Both teams shot exactly 43.9 percent from the field for the game. The Rattlers were 29-for-66, while the Lions were 25-for-57. UAFS shot 40.6 from the three-point line (13-for-32), while StMU made 33.3 percent (4-for-12) and they hit 73.7 percent at the free throw line (14-for-19). The Lions shot 71.4 percent, making 10-of-14 from the line.

St. Mary's concludes the season series with St. Edward's on Wednesday in Austin. The Hilltoppers won the first meeting between the two teams back on December 1, are currently 18-1 on the year and ranked #3 in the nation. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Rattlers return home on Saturday, February 1 to host Texas A&M International at approximately 3 p.m.
