By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Mary's men's basketball played a tight first half with the third-ranked team in the country, but a 19-4 run early in the second half helped St. Edward's pull away and eventually win 89-68 on Wednesday evening.

Freshman point guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) tied for game-high honors with 20 points, while senior forward Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) added 14 and junior forward Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) came off the bench to chip in 11. Senior forward Dimitri Peterson led the Rattlers (10-10, 2-6 Heartland Conference) with seven rebounds, while Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) led with two assists.

The Hilltoppers (19-1, 8-0 Heartland) were led by Ryan Garza with 20 points, while Dorian Lopez notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ashton Spears added 14 points and August Haas led the game with seven assists. Both Spears and Lucas Dorias had three steals each.

How It Happened
Radojicic scored on a free throw and a three-pointer, sandwiched around a Hilltopper layup to open up the scoring in the contest. Jordan followed with a fastbreak layup to give the Rattlers a 6-2 lead with 17:20 to play. After a pair of SEU free throws, senior Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) sank a three-pointer and the Hilltoppers made back-to-back layups to bring the score to 9-8 with 14:56 remaining. The teams traded buckets for several trips until the scoreboard read 13-12 StMU with 13:37 on the clock. The Hilltoppers hit their first triple of the game to regain the lead, but Radojicic immediately answered with a layup for the game's first tie at 15-15 and a layup by Brooks put the lead back in the hands of the Rattlers. The teams again traded layups before another three-pointer by SEU gave them a one-point lead, 20-19 with 10:08 to play. After a Jordan jumper, St. Edward's used a nine-point run to built an eight-point lead, 29-21 before Gaspert snapped it with a triple at the 7:13 mark. After each team made a basket, SEU sank a triple for an eight-point lead, 34-26. Brooks made a jumper that sparked a seven-point run for the Rattlers and brought them within three, 36-33 with 1:36 left in the half and the stanza ended with an SEU layup and the 38-33 tally.

Radojicic scored the first four points of the second half after sophomore Noah Laing (Boerne, Texas) stole the opening possession from the Hilltoppers and junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) grabbed a rebound off an SEU miss. The Hilltoppers then went on the 19-4 run to open up a 57-41 lead with 12:10 remaining. The Rattlers scored the next four to close within 12, 57-45. SEU scored four and the clubs traded three-pointers, then jumpers, then single free throws for the 67-50 score. The two teams continued to go back-and-forth the remainder of the contest, ending on a pair of free throws by Jordan for the 89-68 final score.
