Another overtime heartbreak for men's basketball

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Despite more than doubling up Rogers State in rebounds, the St. Mary's men's basketball team couldn't hold onto a lead late in the second half and dropped another overtime heartbreaker in Heartland Conference play, falling 78-74 on Thursday evening.

The Rattlers (9-9, 1-5 Heartland) grabbed 49 rebounds in the game – the second-highest total of the season – compared to just 24 for the Hillcats (14-6, 3-3 Heartland) and senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) almost out-rebounded RSU single-handedly, bringing down 17, one off his career-high of 18 from last year against Newman.

Freshman point guard Caleb Jordan led the Rattlers with 22 points, scoring 14 of those at the free throw line, where he made 14-of-15 attempts. Senior guard Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) also scored in double figures with 14 points and he and freshman Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) each had two assists.

Rogers State was led by Tate Turner with 23 points, 10 of those at the free throw line, while Brewster Peacock had 18 points and six rebounds, Saint Hilaire scored 11 and Tavian Davis chipped in 10 points and three assists. Jordan Johnson also led the club with three steals.

"They (Rogers State) did a good job," said assistant coach Bubba Meyers. "We were up nine with about three minutes to go and they started pressing and we didn't react really well. We turned it over a couple of times and they scored on those possessions. Our kids played hard and we competed until the end, we just didn't make the plays when we needed to."

Rogers State led the entire first half, leading by as many as 11 (20-9) with 9:14 to go, but the Rattlers closed the half out on a 10-2 run, sparked by back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard Timmy Benavides (San Antonio) to enter the locker room trailing by just two, 29-27.

The Rattlers took their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by Jordan at the 13:08 point of the second half in the midst of a seven-point scoring run by the Blue & Gold – the longest run of the game for StMU. They built their largest lead of the game, nine points at the 3:12 mark on a pair of free throws by junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas), but the Hillcats answered with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 61-61 with 58 seconds remaining and each team would make one free throw for the 62-62 final in regulation.

St. Mary's never held the lead in the overtime period and trailed by as many as six on two different occasions. The score was tied once, 64-64 after Jordan made a pair of free throws, but the Hillcats scored six of the next seven points to put the game away.

The Rattlers remain at home to host UAFS on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for approximately 3 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest. The Lions defeated Texas A&M International earlier this evening.
