Jets ruin Porter's return to the lineup

WICHITA, Kan. – For the first time all season, the St. Mary's women's basketball team has dropped back-to-back contests, losing a heart-breaker at Newman after leading the majority of the game. The Rattlers are now 11-4 on the year and 1-2 in Heartland Conference play after losing 72-64.

The Blue & Gold will look to snap the skid on Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma Christian. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.

One of the bright spots for the Rattlers was senior guard Arysia Porter (San Antonio) made her return to the lineup after missing seven games due to injury. She ended the game with two points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals in 17 minutes of action.

The Rattlers were led by sophomore guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) with 14 points, while sophomore Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Kaitlin Walla (Georgetown, Texas) added 11 points and led the team with four assists.

The Jets (11-5, 2-0 Heartland) were led by Bria DeGrate with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, while Kaitlyn Potter scored 21 on the strength of five three-pointers. Braxtyn Stewart led the club with eight rebounds, Dede Johnson and Michaela Mack each had four assists and Abbey George led the game with four steals.

St. Mary's shot 43.3 percent (26-for-60) from the floor for the game, edging out Newman's 41.9 percent (26-for-62). The Rattlers also shot 42.1 percent from the three-point line (8-for-19), while the Jets shot just 26.5 percent (9-for-34). The Jets made more free throws (11) than the Rattlers attempted (8), as the Jets ended 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) when the Rattlers fouled at the end of the contest. StMU was 4-for-8 (50 percent).

Newman started the game with a layup off a steal, but then it was all Rattlers as they scored next 15 points. Banks led the way with seven of those points and Wilson grabbed five boards during the run. Newman scored seven of the next nine points of the quarter for the 17-9 tally and Audrey Wandji (Houston, Texas) sank a pair of free throws to extend the lead back to double digits, 19-9. The Jets made a three-pointer at the buzzer for the 19-12 first quarter final score.

Thomas opened the second quarter with a triple and Walla followed with one of her own at the 8:56 mark to make the score 25-12. Newman scored on a traditional three-point play and the team's traded jumpers for the 27-17 score. After the Jets scored five of seven points, sophomore guard Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) hit a triple to lift the lead back to 10 points, 32-22 with 5:08 to go in the half and Walla sank another three exactly one minute later for the 35-22 score. The Jets scored five straight, but Culiver again ended the run with a three-pointer on a Porter assist for the 38-27 score with 2:57 remaining. After a Jets free throw, the team exchanged layups and Banks ended the half with a three-pointer for the 43-30 advantage.

The Jets opened the third quarter on a 9-0 scoring run before Wilson made a layup with 6:41 left to stop the streak and make the score 45-39. A three-pointer by the Jets cut the lead in half, but Wilson again scored. The Jets got hot from beyond the arc, sinking a pair from deep sandwiched around a Wandji jumper to cut the Rattlers' lead to one, 49-48 with 4:02 remaining. Wilson scored another layup to preserve the lead, and after another Jets layup cut the lead to one, Culiver hit one free throw to double it.  Porter scored her first points since her return for the 54-50 score with 58 seconds left and a DeGrate layup again cut the lead in half for the 54-52 final score at the end of the third quarter.

Banks hit a jumper to get things going in the final stanza, but the Jets scored the next 10 points to take their first lead since the opening basket of the game, 62-56. Junior point guard Alexia Torres (San Antonio) stopped the streak with one free throw and a jumper at 6:24 for the 59-62. After no scoring by either team for 1:30, Newman scored back-to-back layups to lead 66-59. Walla hit another three-pointer on an assist by Porter with 2:45 ticks for the 66-62 score. The teams traded layups and Potter made four free throws for the Jets for the 72-64 final score.
