Slow start hampers women's basketball

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

OKLAHOMA CITY – A slow start for the St. Mary's women's basketball team led to their third-straight loss on Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma Christian, 104-53. The Rattlers are now 11-5 on the year and 1-3 in the final season of Heartland Conference play.

Oklahoma Christian (9-8, 2-2 Heartland) couldn't seem to miss from beyond the arc early and hit 8-of-10 in the first half, while on the flip side, the Rattlers made just 1-of-15 from downtown and were just 2-for-23 in the game for a season-low 8.7 percent.

Sophomore forward Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) led the Rattlers with 11 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing her seventh double-double of the season. Senior Crystal Thomas (San Antonio) also scored in double figures with 10 points – all scored in the first half. It's the third time this year Thomas has posted double digits, while this is the eighth time Wilson has done so.

Sophomore Mya Culver (Rockwall, Texas), starting in her fourth game of the year and her first since December 8, led the team with four assists, while both senior Arysia Porter (San Antonio) and freshman Meredith Marcum (Corpus Christi, Texas) came off the bench to record three steals each.

With her three steals, Porter now has 216 for her career, moving her into fourth all-time in St. Mary's history past Erin Griffin (2001-04), who recorded 214.  Porter needs three more to move into third on the career charts, as Morgan Pullins (2011-15) tallied 218 in her career. The top two marks at StMU are 303 by Dezirae Elias (2012-16) and 259 by Stephanie Smith (1994-97).

Oklahoma Christian senior guard Addy Clift broke her own school single-game scoring record with 45 points, bettering the record by one point. Back on December 17, she established the school record with 44 points against Eastern New Mexico. Katie Mayo added 31 points as the duo was responsible for 76 of the team's 104 on the afternoon and they combined to hit 10 of the squad's 14 three-pointers. Kendra Levings also came off the bench to chip in 12 points. Mayo led the Lady Eagles with seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while Tyra Peck had a game-high seven assists and five steals.

The first quarter was all Oklahoma Christian as the Lady Eagles built a 35-9 lead, going 7-for-8 from the three-point line and shooting 75 percent (12-for-16) from the floor in the stanza.

The second period was much more competitive as the Rattlers scored 14 to the Lady Eagles 16, however both team leading scorers sophomore guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) and senior Kaitlin Walla (Georgetown, Texas) were kept off the scoreboard in the first half. Thomas led the Rattlers with 10 points and Walla had four rebounds.

After the break, the Lady Eagles continued to shoot the deep ball extremely well, making another six triples in the third quarter. They also did a better job of getting to the foul line making 9-of-10 free throw attempts to outscore the Rattlers 37-to-18 in the quarter and push the lead to 88-41. Both Banks and Wandji scored five points in the quarter to lead the way, with Wandji scoring the final five over the last 31 seconds.

In the final quarter the Lady Eagles outscored the Rattlers 16-to-12 for the 104-53 final. The post players did the majority of the damage for the Rattlers as Wilson scored half of the points with six and all 12 points were scored in the paint. On the opposite side, all 16 of OCU's points were either scored by either layup or free throw.

The Rattlers return home for six of their next seven games, beginning with Rogers State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and the team needs your support as they look to snap the three-game losing streak.
