Women's basketball stumbles against Lubbock Christian

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's women's basketball team saw the visiting Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps get off to a hot shooting start and nothing they tried seemed to slow them down as the #21 Rattlers fell 75-42 on Saturday afternoon.

The Rattlers (11-3, 1-1) never led in the contest as the Lady Chaps (12-4, 2-0) hit 14 three-pointers on the day, including four in the first quarter to build a 13-point lead.

St. Mary's was led in scoring by sophomore guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) with eight points, while sophomore forward Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Alexia Torres (San Antonio) dished out four of the team's six assists and sophomore Jessica Barbosa (Bissai, Guinea Bissai) had two blocked shots.

Lubbock Christian was led by Ashton Duncan, who came off the bench to score 17 off the strength of five three-pointers. Olivia Robertson had 16 points and nine rebounds and three assists, while Allie Schulte led the game with three steals and she also had three assists.

Despite the lopsided score, the Rattlers did manage to pull down 33 rebounds, just one less than the Lady Chaps. The Rattlers shot 32.1 percent for the game (17-for-53) and just 28.6 from the three-point line (2-for-7). They also shot 60 percent from the free throw line (6-for-10). LCU shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-for-56) and 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from beyond the arc, as well as 70 percent from the free throw line (7-for-10).

The Rattlers hit the road for a pair of Heartland Conference tilts on Thursday at Newman at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m.
