Men's basketball rally falls short

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO -- Despite shooting a season-best 55.6 percent from the three-point line, the St. Mary's men's basketball team late rally fell short against Lubbock Christian, 80-68, snapping a three-game winning streak.

The Rattlers (9-6, 1-2 Heartland Conference) made 10-of-18 from the three-point line and trimmed a 19-point Chaparral's (11-5, 2-2) lead to 11 with 2:18 remaining, but they couldn't get any closer. Senior Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) sank four three-pointers en route to a team-high 16 points, while freshman Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) also nailed four triples to score 15 points and he added a game-high six assists and two steals. Senior forward Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) chipped in 11 points, while senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) came off the bench to lead the team with six rebounds.

The Chaps were led by Isaac Asrat with 24 points and eight rebounds. Brennen Fowler scored 12 with seven rebounds and Jay Workman added 10. Three different LCU players had three assists and Kobe Thompson had the team's lone blocked shot.

The Rattlers shot 48 percent from the field (24-for-50) and 62.5 percent from the free throw line (10-for-16) for the game, while the Chaps shot 50.9 from the floor (27-for-53), 46.2 percent from the three-point line (6-for-13) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (20-for-26). LCU also held a huge advantage on the boards as they out-rebounded StMU 37-to-25.

The Rattlers scored the first seven points of the game after junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) and Radojicic hit back-to-back jumpers and Brooks hit a three-pointer. Jordan hit a triple and Radojicic hit another jumper to give the Rattlers a 12-5 lead, but the Chaps chipped away at the score until they took their first lead at 19-18 with 8:59. The Rattlers immediately regained the lead on a Radojicic hook shot and his layup less than a minute later after a Brooks shot extended the lead to four, 24-20. The Chaps went on a 10-0 run over the next 2:30 to build a six-point advantage, 30-24 with 5:15 remaining in the half and entered the locker room up 11, 41-30.

LCU outscored St. Mary's by just one in the second half, 39-to-38 to win by 12, 80-68. Brooks scored 11 of his 16 points in the second stanza. The Rattlers also turned the ball over just four times in the second half during their run.

The Rattlers now hit the road for a pair of Heartland Conference contests, playing at Newman on Thursday evening and at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday.
