Men's basketball drops overtime contest at Newman

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

WICHITA, Kan. – Despite season-highs in scoring from both Skyler Brooks and Caleb Jordan, the St. Mary's men's basketball team dropped a thrilling overtime game at Newman on Thursday evening, 79-76.

The Rattlers (9-7, 1-3 Heartland Conference) trailed by as many as 10 on several occasions before forcing overtime against the Jets (12-5, 3-2 Heartland). This is the first overtime game of the year for the Blue & Gold after playing in two last season and five in 2016-17. They will look to snap the two game losing skid on Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma Christian at approximately 3 p.m.

Brooks, a senior from Seguin, Texas, scored a season-high 23 points and had seven rebounds, missing his career-high by two points (25 vs Dallas Baptist, Feb. 21, 2018), while Jordan, a freshman from Midlothian, Texas tallied a new career-high with a game-high 24 points. This is the fifth time Brooks has scored 20-plus points in his career, while this is the first time Jordan has topped the milestone. Jordan also paced the team with two steals. Junior Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) also scored in double figures with 11 points.

Senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) came off the bench to lead the team in rebounds with eight and he becomes the first Rattler this season to have three blocked shots in a game – which is just one off his career-high.

Newman was led by DeAndre Johnson with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Marshawn Blackmon scored 15 and Dametrius Walker chipped in 11 points and four steals. Ben Ayre led all players with eight assists.

Newman scored the first three points of the game on a free throw and a layup, but senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) scored first for the Rattlers, doing so at the 16:53 mark. The Jets scored the next three, before junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) cut the score in half on an offensive rebound putback for the 6-4 tally at 16:18. A three-pointer by the Jets made it 9-4 and sophomore Noah Laing (Boerne, Texas) made one-of-his-two free throws. The teams traded layups and Jordan cut the Jets lead to one with a three-pointer at 12:51, making the score 11-10. Wilson hit back-to-back three's for the Jets sandwiched around a Laing jumper to stretch the lead to five, 17-12 at 11:40. Both teams went almost three minutes without a bucket before the Jets added another triple for an eight-point advantage, 20-12. Brooks scored on a traditional three-point play, but the Jets answered with another three-pointer and the scoreboard read 23-15 with 8:02 in the first half. Jordan hit a jumper before the Jets sank a pair of free throws and followed with a layup to build a 10-point lead, 27-17 with 5:21 to play. The Rattlers used a 9-1 run with Gaspert scoring four of the points to cut the deficit to two, 28-26 with 2:16 remaining in the half, but the Jets answered with a seven-point run of their own to stretch the lead back to nine, 35-26 with 37 seconds left. Jordan scored four points in the final 17 seconds for the 35-30 tally at the break.

Radojicic hit the first basket of the second stanza to cut into the lead, but the Jets answered with a three-point play for the 38-32 score. After a putback by Brooks, the Jets hit back-to-back triples for another 10-point lead (44-34), but Wesley scored on an and-one to stop the streak. The Jets scored five of the next seven points to lead 49-40. Gaspert started a five-point scoring run for the Rattlers with a layup, followed by a three-point play by Brooks to put the Blue & Gold within four, 49-45. Newman made a layup and Jordan made one of his two free throws to make the score 51-46 with 9:26 left. The teams traded layups and then each team sunk a pair of free throws for the 55-50 scoreboard read. Jordan again made two free throws, while Brooks made one to make it a two-point game with 5:42 remaining. The Jets got an offensive rebound tip-in and Jordan came right down the floor and hit a big three-pointer to make the score 57-56, then followed with a layup with 3:24 on the clock for the team's first lead of the game, 58-57. The Jets tied the score on a free throw, but the Rattlers regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Jordan. Newman again tied the score at 60-60 and Jordan hit one of his attempts at the charity stripe with 1:35 left to score his eighth straight point for the Blue & Gold. The Jets scored on an and-one, but Peterson slammed home a dunk for the 63-63 tie with just under a minute remaining. Blackmon scored a layup for the Jets with 40 ticks left and things looked great for the home team, but Brooks managed to connect on a jumper with two seconds left to force overtime.

The Jets scored first in the extra period, scoring on a tip-in and adding a pair of free throws at the 3:44 mark for the 69-65 lead. The squads traded buckets to keep it a four-point spread. At 2:29, Radojicic hit a hook shot to cut the deficit to two, 71-69, but the Jets answered with another three-pointer 17 seconds later. Peterson scored on a tip-in, but the Jets again had an answer to keep their lead at five points, 76-71 with 1:11 to play. Brooks kept up his strong game, scoring on a second-chance layup with 42 seconds left and after a Jets layup, hit a three-pointer with eight seconds to go for the 78-76 score. In the waning seconds, StMU fouled, Newman made only one and Brooks had a look to send the game to double overtime but it was blocked.
