Volleyball outdueled at home against Lady Chaps

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's hosted Lubbock Christian on Thursday, falling in straight sets, 3-0, at Bill Greehey Arena.

After dropping the first two sets, the Rattlers battled to stay alive in the match. Jumping out to a 7-1 run in the third game, the Rattlers built a four-point lead late, 23-19.

Five-consecutive points by the Lady Chaps set the stage for a frantic finish.

A service error by LCU's Maddie DeGuire tied the game at 24-24. LCU would retake the lead before back-to-back kills from KK Payne put the Rattlers one point away from taking the set.

But four of the final five points would belong to the Lady Chaps as the Rattlers would fall at home for the first time this season.

Payne ended the match with eight kills for the Rattlers while Channing Hankins posted a team-high 10 kills.

Monica Ramon led all players with 26 digs as Jaycie Pluenneke collected a match-high five blocks.

The setting combination of Bree Perry and Haley Bradfute combined for 38 assists as St. Mary's drops back to 1-1 in Heartland Conference play.

St. Mary's will have a quick turnaround as it looks to bounce back at home against Eastern New Mexico on Friday at 3 p.m.
