GOLDEN, Colorado — St. Mary's Men's Soccer capped the opening week of the season in a big way, defeating No. 8-ranked Colorado Mines 4-2 on Sunday.

Last time the Rattlers beat a ranked opponent was in 2014 when they defeated No. 20 Fort Lewis College. Sunday's victory marked the first time the Rattlers beat a top-10 team since they downed Incarnate Word 2-1 in 2003.

The high-scoring affair began with a goal from Luis Sanchez in the 13th minute off an assist from Pato Botello Faz.

In the 28th minute, the Orediggers responded with an equalizer. The half ended with Mines taking a 2-1 lead after a goal in the 39th minute.

Botello would take over in the second half, scoring the equalizer in the 54th minute off an assist from Sanchez.

The tandem would combine for the game winning-goal in the 59th minute as Sanchez netted his second goal of the match off an assist from Botello and Carlos Blasco.

Goalkeeper Gerard Roebuck stood tall recording seven saves and most importantly keeping a clean sheet through the second half.

The Rattlers will return to San Antonio on Sept. 6 for the home opener against UCCS at 7 p.m.
