Historic night ends with Rattlers victorious over Hilltoppers

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The last time St. Mary's Men's Soccer defeated St. Edward's was on Sept. 23, 2011. Then, the Rattlers played at the Rattler Soccer Field located beyond the left field wall of what was known as VJ Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Fast forward 2552 days later and the Rattlers were once again victorious against their rivals from the north. On Monday, #13 St. Mary's defeated St. Edward's 2-1 at Sigma Beta Chi Field to snap a 14-match losing streak against the Hilltoppers that lasted nearly seven years.

A goal from the reigning Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Nenad Markovic, began the scoring in the 16th minute. His third goal in two matches was set up by a long ball from goalkeeper Gerard Roebuck.

Pato Botello Faz kept his goal scoring streak intact with a penalty kick goal in the 19th minute. His sixth goal in five matches put the Rattlers out in front by two and was ultimately the difference in the match.

A free kick from Dylan Armstrong in the 42nd minute trimmed the lead in half, but the Rattler defense held strong as St. Ed's was held to only four shots in comparison to the Rattlers' 13 shot attempts.

On Thursday the Rattlers will hit the road to face No. 1 Midwestern State in a battle between the remaining unbeaten teams in the Heartland Conference.
