Rattlers earn hard-fought draw in season opener

PORTALES, New Mexico — On Thursday, St. Mary's Women's Soccer opened the 2018 season with a 1-1 draw on the road against Eastern New Mexico.
 
The first goal of the season came in the 29th minute courtesy of Alexia Maldonado who deposited the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Miranda Narvaez. St. Mary's would lead 1-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
 
In the second half, the physicality and intensity turned up a notch as three yellow cards were assessed. An ENMU goal by Hayden Zuniga in the 63rd minute tied the match at 1-1.
 
Like the Rattlers' home opener last season, this meeting between the two teams headed to overtime. 
 
However, unlike last year, a winner wouldn't be decided in overtime as both teams begin the new season with a draw.
 
Gabby Olsen and Adriana Smith each placed two shots on goal while MacKenzie Ritch, Leah Whitaker and Paige Meyer logged one shot on frame apiece.
 
The Rattlers will face New Mexico Highlands on Saturday to conclude the opening weekend of the season.
