Give me 5! Women's Tennis clinches 5th straight regional crown

By Georgie Gosen and Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — There were smiles all around Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon — smiles so big that they quite literally stretched across the border.

As the Rattlers gathered for a post-match ceremony following their 5-1 victory over St. Edward's that punched their ticket back to the NCAA National Championship tournament, players surrounded around graduate assistant coach Camille Clausse-Pujo's phone to continue their celebration.

On the other end of the FaceTime call was former standout Mariela Sarinana, a key member of each of the last two national-tournament runs, who had been watching online from back home in Mexico.

No matter whether teammates then or now, this one had everyone celebrating.

The Rattlers (20-3) defended their South Central Regional title for the fifth time in a row, advancing to next month's national championship tournament in Surprise, Arizona.

The Rattlers fought hard in doubles to gain their 2-1 lead into singles, with No. 1 tandem Kaylin Kruseman and Tyra Timm coming out on top 8-6. No. 3 duo Alex Corder and Ally Maciel stayed in control to prevail 8-5.

With the 2-1 lead going into singles, the Rattlers just needed three more matches to clinch the match and be crowned regional champions once again.

No. 1 Kruseman led the way for the Rattlers with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. No. 4 Paulina Torres followed shortly after, dominating her opponent 6-2, 6-2. With three matches still left, the Rattlers only needed one more to be victorious. No. 3 Maciel clinched for the Rattlers, fighting to an intense 6-4, 6-3 battle.
