@StMUsoftball holds off St. Edward's in series opener

AUSTIN, Texas — St. Mary's has a chance to bring another Heartland Conference championship back to the Alamo City.
 
Rattler Softball held off St. Edward's 4-2 in Friday's "Battle of the Saints," leaving the Snakes in need of one more victory to clinch the regular-season title and the right to host next week's Heartland Conference Championship tournament.
 
The Rattlers and Hilltoppers will meet up for two more games Saturday, starting at 12 p.m.
 
On Friday, St. Mary's (31-21) struck for four quick runs over the first two innings, taking a 4-1 lead that proved enough for the victory. Hannah Michel was 1 for 4 with two RBI, while Kristal Salinas and Marcela Vasquez also drove in one run apiece.
 
Staci Johns picked up the victory in her return, improving to 15-5 on the season. She allowed two runs while scattering seven hits and striking out three.
