Rattlers still reign over Heartland Conference

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — For the fourth year in a row, the St. Mary's Rattlers are the Heartland Conference regular-season champions.

With a 9-2 victory in the opener of the doubleheader against St. Edward's, the Rattlers claimed the No. 1 seed in the conference, earning home-field advantage for next week's Heartland Tournament.

Raynelle Nash opened the scoring with an RBI double to right center field in the first inning. She would score in the following at-bat when Brenda Iparraguirre ripped a double down the left field line.

Iparraguirre would go 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Abigale Carney recorded two hits with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Carney would homer along with Marcela Vasquez and Alex Moreno as the Rattler bats came alive.

Hope Russell collected her 11th win of the season in the final regular-season start of her career as she went the distance.

In Game 2, the Rattlers rallied with four-unanswered runs for a come-from-behind victory.

Nash, Moreno, Hannah Michel and Alessandra Ortiz each posted two-hit games as the Rattlers ended the season sweeping the five-game season series against the Hilltoppers.

Staci Johns tossed her second complete game of the weekend as she allowed only one run on five hits.

The Rattlers will host the Heartland Conference Tournament next week at the Softball Stadium.
