Rattlers return to form at home with wins over TAMIU

SAN ANTONIO — Softball returned home after a seven-game road trip, sweeping a Friday afternoon doubleheader against Texas A&M International.

Both contests followed a similar narrative with the Dustdevils striking first and the Rattlers responding.

Game 1 saw Staci Johns, the reigning NFCA National Pitcher of the Week, dominate in the circle as she held the Dustdevils to only one hit in seven complete innings pitched. The sophomore struck out six as she would go on to retire the last 16 batters she faced, tossing five-perfect innings to end the game.

With the Rattlers trailing by one in the bottom of the second inning, Alessandra Ortiz crushed a two-run homer to the left field bullpen to give the Rattlers the lead.

In the nightcap, Marcela Vasquez and Brenda Iparraguirre rose to the occasion at the plate.

Vasquez connected on a pair of base hits as she collected a trio of RBI. Iparraguirre finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.

Hope Russell threw five innings en route to her 10th victory of the season as Alex McLennan picked up her fifth save.

The pair of victories pushes head coach Donna Fields to 899 career victories. Tomorrow, the 19th winningest coach in NCAA Division II Softball history has a chance to join the 900 win club when the Rattlers host the Dustdevils in the series finale at noon.
