Rattlers battle on Day 2 of College Classic

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Softball split a pair of close games on Day 2 of the St. Mary's College Classic on Friday.

The nightcap saw the Rattlers rebound with a 4-2 victory over California of Pennsylvania behind a complete game outing from Staci Johns.

Trailing on two separate occasions, the Rattlers would respond each time, capitalizing on defensive miscues by the Vulcans that ultimately was the difference.

Raynelle Nash finished 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk and a run scored as Taylor Germain ended the game 1-for-1 with a hit, a walk and the team's lone RBI.

Johns would toss seven innings with nine strikeouts, allowing only two runs in the process.

Game 1 of the day featured a matchup between the Rattlers and Texas Woman's. The recent history between the two teams includes meetings in the NCAA South Central Regional in each of the past two seasons.

After topping the Pioneers in 2016 to advance to its third straight Super Regional, St. Mary's would ultimately fall in the most recent postseason meeting last season.

The latest installment saw the Pioneers defeating the Rattlers, 4-3, in yet another close affair.

Brenda Iparraguirre carried the load for the Rattlers as she went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, falling a triple short of the cycle.

Her home run in the third inning would tie the game at three before TWU would strike an inning later with the go-ahead run.

On Day 3 of the tournament, the Rattlers are slated to play in the final game of the day at 4:45 p.m. against Cameron.
