Fernandez-Beltran dazzles as Snakes strike Texans

SAN ANTONIO — Fernando Fernandez-Beltran dazzled in his Dickson Stadium debut, pitching a complete-game, 10-strikeout gem for the Rattlers in Friday's drizzly home opener.
 
Backed by his powerful left arm and some timely hitting from Oscar Betancourt, St. Mary's Baseball got past Tarleton State, 3-1, for the Snakes' first victory of the season. Tarleton State dropped to 2-2 on the year.
 
Betancourt's two-RBI single in the fourth pulled St. Mary's (1-3) in front at 2-1, which was all the cushion Fernandez-Beltran needed on this day. For good measure, Jacob Aguilar added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly that scored Donnie Perez.
 
Perez scored two runs on a 1-for-3 afternoon. Betancourt finished 2 for 4 with two RBI at the plate.
 
Fernandez-Beltran squandered a third-inning run on an RBI single from Adams, but was virtually flawless otherwise. He scattered six hits and walked three while fanning 10 of his 34 batters faced.
 
The teams will resume action Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
